The Overlooked Hormone: Why Testosterone Matters for Women’s Health
Testosterone is often viewed as the “male hormone,” but women produce it via the ovaries and adrenal glands and it plays a key role in energy, mood, muscle, fertility, libido and overall vitality.
Testosterone levels decline naturally as we age, but can also plummet from chronic stress, adrenal pressure and HPA-axis dysregulation. This drop can contribute to a range of symptoms that go beyond just low energy and a nonexistent libido.
What Testosterone Does in Women
Here are key physiological roles of testosterone in women:
-
Muscle mass & strength: It contributes to muscle protein synthesis, preserves lean mass and supports metabolic rate. Hello feeling like you're showing up to the gym every week but aren't improving in strength? Frustrating!
-
Libido & sexual function: Testosterone helps regulate sexual desire.
-
Mood, cognition & energy: The hormone influences neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, and supports brain-fog reduction, motivation and stamina.
Because of these key roles there are a few symptoms to be on the look out for:
-
Reduced libido or sexual interest
-
Decreased muscle tone, increased fat deposition (especially stomach area)
-
Persistent fatigue, struggling with motivation or endurance
-
Mood changes, irritability, brain-fog or difficulty concentrating
-
Slower recovery from exercise, reduced physical resilience
-
Possible thinning of hair, weaker nails or slower repair
