4 Herbs for PCOS: Time to Ditch the Overwhelm:
The Top 5 Herbs for Managing PCOS
If you're dealing with symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) such as irregular menstrual cycles, acne, or intense sugar cravings. There are some herbal options that can offer natural support. These herbs aim to help regulate hormones, support ovulation, and improve insulin sensitivity. The key is to know your type of PCOS and consulting with a naturopath or nutritionist before jumping into trialling herbs and hoping for the best.
1. Licorice + Peony
When used together, licorice and peony can help reduce testosterone levels, support increases in oestrogen, lower prolactin, and balance the LH/FSH ratio. These effects may improve acne, unwanted facial/body hair, hair loss on the scalp, support ovulation/fertility, regularise the cycle, and enhance hair growth.
Caution: Avoid or use cautiously in cases of high blood pressure or elevated cortisol levels.
2. Black Cohosh
Black cohosh can help to lower luteinising hormone (LH) levels, which are often elevated in PCOS. High LH can drive increased testosterone production, leading to symptoms such as hirsutism (excess facial/body hair), acne, scalp-hair thinning, oily skin, and irregular cycles.
Important caution: If you have a history of migraines or severe headaches.
3. Spearmint
Spearmint may be effective at reducing androgen levels, which in turn can ease symptoms like excess hair growth, acne, thinning scalp hair, oily skin, and cycle irregularity in women with PCOS. Lowering androgens may also promote healthier hair and skin. This can be enjoyed and has been clinically trialled using just 2-3 cups of strong spearmint tea each day.
Note: Use with caution if your profile shows LH dominance.
4. Saw Palmetto
A favourite of mine, Saw palmetto acts as a natural anti-androgen by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into the more potent DHT (dihydrotestosterone). This can help reduce hirsutism, acne, and scalp-hair thinning associated with elevated androgens in PCOS.
Using the right herbal tools can be a powerful way to address PCOS symptoms naturally, but every individual’s physiology is unique and PCOS type should be determined via testing before starting.
